Hells of Beppu

Beppu's famous hell springs spread across the Kannawa and Kamegawa areas, best treated as a half-day geothermal sightseeing stop.

The official JNTO page positions the hells as a viewing experience rather than a bathing stop, with the main clusters in Kannawa and Kamegawa. Because parking is available at the sites, this fits naturally into a self-drive route, but it still works best when limited to a half day. After a morning in Yufuin, drive into Beppu, focus on the better-known cluster first, and leave the rest of the afternoon for an onsen hotel or seaside dinner.
